Big Tray Deee Facts

  1. Before joining the music industry, Big Tray Deee was an active gang member. He had been a member of the Insane Crips gang in Long Beach, California. The Crips, of which Insane Crips was a member, was an alliance of street gangs based in the coastal regions of southern California. It was founded in Los Angeles in 1969.
  2. He was featured for the first time on Snoop Dogg‘s Murder Was the Case soundtrack in 1994, guest-starring on the track 21 Jumpstreet. He had also been featured on the artist’s second studio album, titled Tha Doggfather, in 1996.
  3. In 1999, he had joined the Platinum-selling hip-hop group Tha Eastsidaz. The group had released 2 albums – Tha Eastsidaz (2000) and Duces ‘n Trayz: The Old Fashioned Way (2001). Around the same time, he was also affiliated with car club-street band The IV Life Family. He had later signed up with their record label IV Life Records.
  4. In February 2005, he had been sentenced to 12 years in prison on charges of attempted murder. The charges had pertained to a violent incident in 2003 wherein he was alleged to have fired at members of a rival gang. After the hearing over the incident had been completed and the sentence had been announced, he was imprisoned at California Men’s Colony, a male-only state prison located northwest of the city of San Luis Obispo, in San Luis Obispo County, California. After serving about 9 years of his 12 years jail sentence, he had been released in April 2014.
  5. In 2014, having released just 1 solo album thus far in his career (The General’s List (2002)), he had announced that he would be releasing his next studio album in 2016 – The 3rd Coming (2016). In this period, he had released 3 mixtapes – Long Beach State of Mind Vol. I: The Mixtape (2014), That’s My Work Vol. 4 (2014), and Long Beach State of Mind Vol. II: Street Officials (2016).
  6. The first of these mixtapes, Long Beach State of Mind Vol. I: The Mixtape (2014), was recorded while he was still incarcerated, on a phone, in a makeshift vocal booth made from blankets and boxes in his prison cell. He had continued to write songs and record some other material during his 9-year jail term which was released after he had been freed in April 2014.
