Dasun Shanaka Facts

  1. In June 2016, Dasun had made his ODI debut in a match against Ireland. It was a magical first impression, to say the least. He had first smoked 42 runs off just 19 balls, a knock that had included 5 fours and 3 sixes. His bowling performance in the match was even more spectacular as he scalped 5 wickets for just 42 runs. This had made him just the 12th player in history, and only the 3rd Sri Lankan, to take 5 wickets on debut in an ODI match. At the end of the 2-match series, he was adjudged the ‘Player of the Series’.
  2. In the 2018 SLC T20 League, he was the leading run-scorer for Kandy recording 312 runs in 6 matches. He had also scored a hundred in the team’s final match of the tournament.
  3. In 2019, he had been appointed the captain of a heavily depleted Sri Lankan squad for a bilateral T20I series in Pakistan. Surpassing all expectations, under his leadership, the Sri Lankan team had whitewashed a full-strength Pakistan team by a margin of 3-0. Remarkably, the first of those 3 wins was Sri Lanka’s first T20I win against Pakistan in 6 years. This was also the first time that Sri Lanka had whitewashed a team in a T20I series and the first occasion for Pakistan to have suffered a whitewash in a bilateral T20I series.
  4. In February 2021, he was again appointed Sri Lanka’s T20I captain, for a bilateral series against the West Indies. However, he had to miss the entire series as he was unable to travel to the Caribbean due to a visa issue. In July 2021, for Sri Lanka’s ODI and T20I home series against India, he was appointed the team’s captain.
