Dua Saleh Facts

  1. Dua’s family had become refugees of the Second Sudanese Civil War (a conflict from 1983 to 2005 between the central Sudanese government and the Sudan People’s Liberation Army) in the 1990s. They had fled the country when Dua was five years old and had moved to Eritrea at first. They had then escaped to the United States, living in North Dakota, Maine, and Newark, New Jersey, before eventually settling down in Saint Paul, Minnesota.
  2. They had started writing poetry from the age of 4 and had performed at their first open mic in their senior year of high school. They had used this skill to process experiences in their life and had continued to perform at local events and school. One of their poems, titled Pins and Needles, had been shared on the Minneapolis-based poetry company Button Poetry‘s YouTube channel where it had amassed more than a hundred thousand views by 2018.
  3. At Augsburg University, they had started experimenting with music for the first time and had released a demo in 2017. Soon, they had started working with a local producer named Psymun and this had ultimately resulted in the release of Dua’s debut EP titled Nūr in January 2019.
  4. At the university, they had once led a walkout from their former high school in protest of the school-to-prison pipeline (the disproportionate tendency of minors and young adults from disadvantaged backgrounds to become incarcerated because of harsh school and municipal policies, as well as because of educational inequality in the United States) at Saint Paul Central High School.
  5. Dua is nonbinary and uses they/them, he/him, and xe/xyr pronouns. They had come out while in their second year at Augsburg University.
