Gudakesh Motie Facts

  1. Many publications have often stated his surname as Moti-Kanhai instead of Motie-Kanhai. Gudakesh has stated that this is a consequence of his name being incorrectly recorded on a previous passport.
  2. In the West Indies’ last match of the 2014 Under-19 ICC Cricket World Cup, a 5th-place playoff against India, he was the team’s best bowler – recording figures of 3/52 in 10 overs. His effort, however, was not enough to stop India from piling up a mammoth score of 340 runs. West Indies fought hard in their reply but the target was a bit too stiff as they succumbed to a 46-run defeat which meant that they had to be satisfied with a 6th-place finish in the 16-team tournament.
  3. He made his first-class debut for Guyana in November 2015, during the 2015–16 edition of the Regional Four Day Competition (the premier domestic first-class cricket competition in the West Indies). In just his 2nd game that season, against the Leeward Islands, he recorded sensational bowling figures of 6/20 and 5/85. He was named the ‘Player of the Match’ for his outstanding performance.
  4. He continued his fairytale debut first-class season by recording figures of 6/79 in the following match against Barbados. 2 games later, against Jamaica, he recorded yet another 5-wicket haul (6/33).
  5. He was the leading wicket-taker (16 wickets) in the 2021 edition of the Regional Super50 (the premier domestic one-day cricket competition in the West Indies).
  6. Although primarily renowned for his skills with the ball, it was an effort with the bat in hand that turned out to be his lucky charm as far as making his international test match debut for the West Indies was concerned. In May 2022, during the 2021–22 season of the West Indies Championship (the 55th edition of the Regional Four Day Competition), he scored his maiden century in first-class cricket, a knock of 110 runs against Barbados.
  7. The following month, he was named in the West Indies’ test match squad for their home bilateral series against Bangladesh. In June 2022, in the first match of that series, he made his international test match debut. He would also make his ODI debut, against the same opposition, the following month.
