Harmanpreet Singh is an Indian professional field hockey player who is widely regarded as one of the best exponents of the drag-flick in his era. A penalty corner specialist in the Indian senior national team, he won the ‘Gold’ medal at the 2017 Dhaka Asia Cup, the 2018 Muscat Asian Champions Trophy, the 2016 Lucknow Hockey Junior World Cup, and the 2015 Kuantan Junior Hockey Asia Cup. He had clinched the ‘Silver’ medal at the 2016 London Champions Trophy, the 2018 Breda Champions Trophy, and the 2022 Birmingham Commonwealth Games. Harmanpreet had also secured the ‘Bronze’ medal at the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games (played in July and August 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic), the 2018 Jakarta Asian Games, the 2021 Dhaka Asian Champions Trophy, and the 2016–17 Bhubaneswar Hockey World League.

  1. Harmanpreet first came into the spotlight in 2014 when he scored 9 goals to help India win the Sultan of Johor Cup (an annual, international under–21 men’s field hockey tournament that has been held since 2011, in Malaysia). He was also honored with the ‘Player of the Tournament’ award.
  2. At the subsequent edition (2015) tournament, he was again in the thick of the action and scored 4 goals including India’s opening goal in the final which they lost to Great Britain in a penalty shoot-out.
  3. At the 2015 Kuantan Junior Hockey Asia Cup, he was the highest goalscorer with 14 goals and his performances were instrumental in India winning the title. He had also scored 3 goals in India’s title triumph at the 2016 Lucknow Hockey Junior World Cup.
  4. At the 2016 London Champions Trophy, where India won the ‘Silver’ medal, Harmanpreet won the ‘Young Player of the Tournament’ award.
  5. When India won the Asia Cup for the 3rd time in 2017, he was the joint top-scorer in the tournament (with Malaysian Faizal Saari) with 7 goals.
  6. During the 2021–22 season of the Men’s FIH Pro League (an international men’s field hockey competition, organized by the International Hockey Federation since 2019), in a match against England, Harmanpreet scored the 100th goal of his senior international career. Adding icing to the cake, he converted this performance into a hat-trick (the individual feat of scoring 3 goals in the same match) that helped India win the match by a 4–3 margin.
  7. For his services to field hockey, the Government of India honored him with the Arjuna Award (the 2nd-highest sporting honor in India) in 2021.
  8. For his performances in 2020 and 2021, he was honored with the ‘Player of the Year’ award by FIH (Fédération Internationale de Hockey). Harmanpreet became just the 2nd Indian male player to have earned this honor – after Manpreet Singh did so in 2019.
