Of Korean ancestry, Eugene spent his childhood in Austin, Texas; during his childhood years he would take up taekwondo lessons, and has earned a black belt in this Korean martial art. He has nurtured his Asian roots for which he was often bullied by his peers, and would spend time by himself while in high school, never fitting in. After finishing high school, Eugene enrolled at the University of Southern California from which he obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree in cinematic arts/production, with a 4.0 GPA.
Before he joined BuzzFeed, Eugene was involved in several other projects; he was a freelance music video and commercial director for a production company known as Menagerie, while he also wrote, directed and produced several short films – “Ma cité, mon histoire” in 2009, then “Wandering Star” in 2012, and “Comfort Girls” in 2014. Thanks to the success of his early projects, Eugene was recommended to BuzzFeed by a friend.
He started working behind the camera as a video producer, but would later appear on screen too, with three other colleagues at BuzzFeed starting the comedy show “The Try Guys”.
Rise to Prominence and Leaving BuzzFeed
The first video of the guys was entitled “Guys Try On Ladies’ Underwear For The First Time”, which became an instant hit. Encouraged by this success, they made another three weeks later, entitled “Men Try On Ladies’ Sexy Halloween Costumes”, which became even more successful. The quartet decided to make new videos and made their show an official BuzzFeed production. They have become extremely popular, with more than four million subscribers on their official YouTube channel, on which you can see all of his videos as The Try Guys and many more. Eugene has also started working on another show entitled “Squad Wars”, as a producer and host, in which The Try Guys and other comedy groups compete against each other.
Most recently, Eugene and the other members of The Try Guys left BuzzFeed and have started their own production company, named 2nd Try LLC, through which they have obtained all rights to The Try Guys videos and further projects, while BuzzFeed is still a holder of The Try Guys brand.
