Jordan Chiles Facts

  1. Jordan’s parents had named her after the legendary American basketball player Michael Jordan.
  2. She was mostly brought up in Vancouver, Washington, but had relocated to Spring, Texas, in 2019 to train with fellow gymnast and Olympic medalist Simone Biles at the World Champions Centre, an American artistic gymnastics academy.
  3. In July 2021, her mother was convicted of wire fraud, a federal crime in the United States that involves mailing or electronically transmitting something associated with the fraud. She had allegedly stolen more than USD 1.2 million from clients in a span of 4 years. She was sentenced to 366 days in prison and ordered to pay back her clients restitution post her release from prison. Upon appeal, her sentence was delayed by a month so that she could be present to witness Jordan’s participation in the 2020 Summer Olympics.
  4. At the 2020 Summer Olympics, during the team final, she was initially supposed to compete only in the vault and floor exercise events. However, after Simone Biles had withdrawn abruptly from the competition after the first rotation, Jordan had been chosen as her last-minute replacement in the uneven bars and balance beam events. She managed to execute both routines quite well despite limited practice in those routines. She, however, fell on her 3rd pass in the floor exercise event. The United States eventually won the ‘Silver’ medal, finishing second behind the team from the Russian Olympic Committee.
  5. In February 2021, she had become the first-ever women’s all-around Winter Cup champion. The previous editions of the tournament were restricted to male participation and this was the first occasion that female gymnasts were included in the competition.
