Kostas Antetokounmpo is a Greek professional basketball player who has represented the Dallas Mavericks (2018-2019) and the Los Angeles Lakers (2019-2021) in the NBA (National Basketball Association), as a power forward / center. He had been picked 60th overall in the 2nd round of the 2018 NBA Draft by the Philadelphia 76ers who had traded his draft rights to the Dallas Mavericks. In 2020, although he had not been selected to play during the finals, he had won his first NBA Championship after the Lakers had defeated the Miami Heat in 6 games. In July 2021, he had signed up a contract with LDLC ASVEL of the French Betclic Élite and the Euroleague.

  1. Kostas was born in Athens, Greece, to Nigerian parents who had emigrated from Lagos 6 years before his birth. His parents had left their firstborn son, Francis, back in Nigeria.
  2. In Greece, his family’s name was Romanized to Antetokounmpo from the original Adetokunbo which roughly translates to ‘The Crown has returned from Overseas’.
  3. He had not received Greek citizenship until 2016, as the Greek nationality law abides by the principle of jus sanguinis. In June 2013, a Nigerian passport had been granted to him so that he could gain a visa and legally enter the United States.
  4. After his older brother, Giannis, had been picked up by the Milwaukee Bucks in the 2013 NBA Draft, his family had moved to Milwaukee. In high school, Kostas had played basketball during his junior and senior years. In his senior year, he led his team to a state championship.
  5. In 2016, he had represented the Greek under-20 national team at the FIBA Europe Under-20 Championship Division B. The team had won the ‘Bronze’ medal as he had averaged 1.3 points and 1.8 rebounds per game during the tournament.
  6. In the 2016–17 season, his first with the University of Dayton, he had been red-shirted due to having spent his first 2 years of high school in Greece.
  7. In 2020, he had become the first Greek-born player to win an NBA Championship. The following season, his older brothers Giannis and Thanasis had won the NBA Championship as teammates with the Milwaukee Bucks.
