Nneka Ogwumike is an American professional basketball player who has represented the Los Angeles Sparks (2012–Present), as a power forward, in the Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA). She was picked 1st overall in the 1st round, by the Los Angeles Sparks, at the 2012 WNBA Draft. She was named the league’s ‘MVP’ (Most Valuable Player) for the 2016 season and also won the WNBA Finals that year. As of September 2022, she has been selected for the annual ‘WNBA All-Star Game’ 7 times (2013–2015, 2017–2019, 2022); included in the ‘All-WNBA First Team’ once (2016); and included in the ‘WNBA All-Defensive First Team’ 4 times (2015–2017, 2019). She was elected the President of the WNBA Players Association in 2016 and was re-elected for a 3-year term in 2019. In 2021, she was named to ‘The W25’, the league’s list of the top 25 players in its first 25 years of existence, as selected by a panel consisting of media members and pioneering women’s basketball figures. In the WNBA off-season, she has turned out for CCC Polkowice (2012–2013) in Poland and Dynamo Kursk (2014–2018) in Russia. With the former team, she won the Polish National League Championship in 2013. With the latter, she won the EuroLeague Women’s Championship in 2017.
