Sarfaraz Khan Facts

  1. Sarfaraz had first come into the spotlight in 2009 when, as a 12-year-old, he had broken the school record of the great Sachin Tendulkar by recording an inning of 439 runs in a Harris Shield match. The inning, studded with 56 fours and 12 sixes, was his first in the tournament. The feat meant that he was on the radar of local and national selectors and was selected for the Mumbai Under-19 team, and subsequently for the Indian Under-19 team.
  2. In 2015, he had set the record for being the then-youngest player to have participated in an IPL match. He also holds the record of being the first uncapped player (a player who has not been a member of his country’s senior national team) to have been retained by a franchise in the IPL.
  3. At the 2016 ICC Under-19 World Cup, he had finished as the tournament’s second-highest run-scorer with 355 runs from 6 innings at an impressive average of 71. 5 of those innings were worth more than 50 runs and he was also India’s top-scorer in the final match that they lost. Combined with his performance in the previous edition of the tournament (2014), he had set the record for the most number of 50s (7) at the ICC Under-19 World Cup.
  4. In 2011, he was embroiled in controversy after another school team had accused him of fudging his age so that he could participate in a particular age-group tournament. Initial bone tests had indicated that the allegation was true but further advanced tests had exonerated him of any wrongdoing. The controversy had affected him emotionally and it had taken him a few months to re-focus his energies on cricket.
  5. In 2015, he was dropped from the team after making offensive gestures towards the team’s selectors just after leading the Mumbai team to a win in the Under-19 championship semi-final. His match fees for 2 years were withheld as a result.
