- His parents got divorced when he was still a child. He was then brought up by his grandparents for a while before settling down with his mother, stepfather, and younger half-brother Jonathan.
- Encouraged by his mother to try different sports since childhood, he used to compete in baseball, American football, and wrestling, while he was studying at Eastlake North High School. He had even received offers from Major League Baseball (MLB) teams during his collegiate years at Cleveland State University and Trevecca Nazarene University.
- He had played Division II baseball at Coker University during his junior year of college. In his senior year, he had recorded an average of .344 with 7 home runs to help the team win the 2005 TranSouth Athletic Conference regular-season and tournament titles.
- As of January 2021, he had held the UFC record for most wins in heavyweight title fights as well as the record for the longest title defense streak in the heavyweight division (3 successive defenses).
