Yulia Putintseva Facts

  1. Yulia was introduced to the sport of tennis by her father at a very young age and she used to train at the Spartak Club in Moscow. In her mid-teens, she had moved to Paris temporarily to join the Mouratouglou Academy. The opportunity had come her way after she had won an important under-14 tournament. She had turned professional in 2009, aged just 14.
  2. Until May 2012, she had represented her home country of Russia after which she had changed her allegiance to Kazakhstan. This was because she was upset with the Russian Tennis Federation for not granting her a wild card at the previous year’s Kremlin Cup. Thereafter, the Kazakhstan Tennis Federation had offered her financial and technical support.
  3. In February 2017, she had reached her first tournament final on the WTA Tour, at the singles event of the St. Petersburg Trophy. She had defeated 2 ‘Top 10’ ranked players during the tournament in successive matches – the then world number 8 Svetlana Kuznetsova in the quarter-final and the then world number 5 Dominika Cibulková in the semi-final.
  4. This had made her the first player representing Kazakhstan to reach a WTA Tour singles final since Yaroslava Shvedova‘s final appearance at the 2015 Copa Colsanitas. Following the tournament, Yulia had achieved a career-high singles ranking of 27, a mark that she has not breached as of July 2021.
  5. In the 2nd round of the 2019 Birmingham Classic, she had upset the then world number 1 Naomi Osaka by a score of 6–2, 6–3. The following month, she had defeated Naomi again in straight sets, this time in the 1st round of the Wimbledon Championship.
