Yusuf Pathan Facts

  1. Yusuf’s very first international match for India was the final of the 2007 ICC World T20, the inaugural edition of the tournament. He was drafted into the Indian playing XI at the 11th hour after regular opener Virender Sehwag had withdrawn due to a groin injury. In that final match, against Pakistan, he had scored 15 quick runs as India went on to win the match by just 5 runs and thus, win the trophy.
  2. In the 2008 IPL season, the tournament’s inaugural edition, he was a vital contributor in the Rajasthan Royals’ fairytale run to the title. He had scored 435 runs and taken 8 wickets in the season and was also adjudged the ‘Player of the Match’ in the final, against the Chennai Super Kings. He had also recorded the season’s fastest fifty (21 balls), in a match against the Deccan Chargers.
  3. In that final match, he had recorded figures of 3/22 to limit the Chennai Super Kings to a score of 163/5. In the chase, he had struck 56 runs off just 39 balls as the Rajasthan Royals had reached the target of 164 runs off the last ball of their innings to lift the title. In May 2021, ESPNCricinfo had ranked his performance in that match as the greatest IPL performance in history.
  4. In the final of the 2010 Duleep Trophy (a domestic first-class cricket competition contested by teams representing geographical zones of India), he had scored a hundred in the first innings and a double hundred in the second innings and had led his team, West Zone, to a 3-wicket win over South Zone. In the second innings, his unbeaten knock of 210 runs from 190 balls had helped his team chase down their humongous target of 536 runs. This was the then-highest successful run chase in first-class cricket history.
  5. In March 2010, in an IPL match against the Mumbai Indians, he had scored a 37-ball hundred that had included 11 consecutive hits to the boundary (6, 6, 6, 6, 4, 4, 6, 4, 4, 4, 4). As of October 2021, this was still the IPL’s second-fastest hundred, only bettered by a Chris Gayle blitzkrieg in April 2013 where he had recorded the highest score in IPL history (175 runs) including a 30-ball hundred.
  6. In May 2013, he had become the first batsman in T20 cricket history to be given out for obstructing the field, while playing for the Kolkata Knight Riders against the Pune Warriors India.
  7. In May 2014, he had scored a fifty off just 15 balls, while playing for the Kolkata Knight Riders against the Sunrisers Hyderabad. As of October 2021, this was still the IPL‘s second-fastest fifty, only bettered by K. L. Rahul (14 balls) in a match between the Kings XI Punjab and the Delhi Capitals in April 2018.
